The words we use, explained

Our own tools and frameworks, defined plainly. If anything on this site is unclear, tell us — we will add it here.

Brain Profile

A free, once-only questionnaire (about five minutes) that maps how a learner prefers to take in and work with information. It is a learning-style profile — not a diagnosis of any kind — and it powers the personal recommendations across the site and Synapse.

Learning Archetype

The result of the Brain Profile: one of ten plain-named types (such as Architect, Storyteller, Explorer) that describes your strongest learning pattern, with practical study suggestions for it.

Smart Score

A per-topic strength measure in Synapse, from 0 to 100. It rises as you answer harder questions correctly and dips when you slip — so you always know what to revise next. It is a progress signal, not a grade.

Synapse

The Institute's adaptive practice platform: GCSE and IGCSE questions that adjust to how you are actually doing, across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Free to start; your progress, Smart Scores and XP live in your account.

Learning Lab

An Academy support subject: structured sessions that build the skills around the subjects — organisation, revision technique, reading and comprehension — for learners who need the foundations strengthened alongside (or before) subject content.

Learning Loop

The repeating cycle used across the Academy: teach → practise → feedback → revisit. Every lesson is followed by adaptive practice and marked work, and every topic returns at spaced intervals so it sticks.

Daily Missions

Short, focused practice sets in Synapse — a handful of questions chosen for you each day. Designed to take minutes, not hours, and to keep retention ticking over between lessons.

XP

Experience points earned in Synapse for answering questions and completing missions. XP measures engagement and momentum — it is deliberately separate from Smart Score, which measures mastery.

N.E.U.R.O. framework

The Summer Exam Advantage revision framework: Notice · Encode · Understand · Retrieve · Optimise — five steps that turn revision into something that shows up on results day. Taught in the workshop and its recording.

H.A.B.I.T. system

The Habit Advantage's behaviour-change loop: Anchor · Begin · Backup · Inspect · Tweak — why motivation-dependent studying collapses, and the cue → action → reward structure that replaces it.
